Yarn winding tools: from hank to neat ball

A yarn swift and ball winder help turn a hank into a neat, evenly wound ball. The swift holds the opened hank and lets it rotate freely, while the winder forms a ball from which the yarn can be pulled from the centre or the outside.

When are both tools useful?

A hank must first be opened and held securely so that the yarn does not tangle while winding. The swift makes this easier, while the ball winder maintains an even yarn path. If only one tool is used, another person or a suitable support must hold the hank reliably and evenly.

How to choose a ball winder and swift

Check the maximum hank circumference, winder capacity, table-mounting method, clamp opening and materials. Consider whether there is enough working space and whether the tools will be easy to store when not in use.

How to wind safely

Before starting, find the yarn end, remove the ties and make sure the hank can rotate freely. Wind evenly without excessive tension that could stretch the yarn. Explore the full yarn range, craft needles and other knitting accessories.
