Long straight knitting needles for flat knitting

Long straight needles are used as a pair for flat pieces worked back and forth. They suit scarves, shawls, sweater panels, cushion covers and other projects where the work is turned at the end of each row. Stitches are formed with the pointed end, while the stopper at the other end prevents them from sliding off.

How to choose the length and diameter

Match the needle diameter to the yarn label, pattern and desired gauge. The length should comfortably hold the required number of stitches, but needles that are too long can be awkward for a small piece. Before starting a garment, knit and wash a swatch to confirm the gauge and choose the size more accurately.

Which material should you choose?

Wooden and bamboo needles generally provide more grip, while a smoother metal surface lets stitches slide more easily. Comfort also depends on the yarn, your knitting style and the finish of the particular tool, so consider more than the material name alone.

When is another needle type more suitable?

For wider or heavier pieces, circular needles are often more comfortable because the cable supports the weight. For small circumferences worked in the round, explore double-pointed sock needles, while further options are available in the main knitting needles and crochet hooks category.
