Lyocell - a modern fibre for contemporary needlework

The world of needlework is constantly changing. Beside Traditional Materials are increasingly giving rise to new fibres with interesting properties. One such choice is Lyocell thread, which have been gaining more and more attention over the past years, both in textiles and handicrafts. Lyocell is considered to be a modern fibre because its production technology is relatively new. However, the raw material itself is not artificial - Lyocell yarns are made from natural wood cellulose, which is why they are often classified as more sustainable and environmentally friendly Textiles Materials.

What is lyocell?

Lyocell is a fibre made from wood pulp, usually from eucalyptus, beech or other fast-growing trees. This wood is treated in such a way that it can be made into fine textile fibres. Interestingly Lyocell yarns are often considered one of the more advanced cellulosic materials, as their production process can be more efficient and less polluting than some other fibres. It is for this reason that lyocell is often referred to at for sustainable textiles.

Lyocell surface and feel

The surface of the lyocell is visible quite quickly when working with it. Lyocell yarns are often very smooth and soft, which can make them look quite elegant in knitwear. Some needleworkers find that lyocell resembles viscose or even silk. At the same time, however, it is often slightly more stable. In addition, lyocell fibres often have a subtle sheen, which gives the knits a light and clean visual effect.

Ease and convenience

One of the things that makes the locela attractive handicrafts is its lightness. Even larger knits in this yarn can be quite light. Lyocell yarns often produce a soft falling fabric, so clothes can look natural and comfortable. Because of this characteristic, lyocell is often used for lighter projects, especially those for the warm season.

Projects using lyocell thread

Lyocell is quite often chosen for projects where softness and lightness are important.

Usually Lyocell thread used:

  • for lightweight sweaters
  • for summer blouses
  • for scarves
  • for thin scarves
  • for decorative accessories

Some needleworkers also use lyocell crochet for projects where the yarn can produce a very neat surface.

Knitting behaviour of Liozel

When working with different fibres, it is not only the end result that matters, but also the process itself. Lyocell yarns are often quite smooth, so they can slide easily over the shakes. Some knitters find this very convenient as it can make the knitting go quite smoothly. Others find that the surface takes some getting used to at first. However, in most cases the lyocell yarn allows for a very neat knit structure.

Moisture absorption and comfort

Lyocell has another interesting characteristic - it absorbs moisture quite well. Lyocell yarns can help create knits that are comfortable even in warmer weather, as the fabric can remain fresh. For this reason, lyocell is often used for garments intended for summer or more active daily wear.

Combinations with other fibres

Lyocell is quite often used in mixtures with other yarns. This allows different properties to be combined in a single fibre. Lyocell yarns can be combined with cotton, wool or even silk, to make the knitted fabric both soft and stable. Such combinations are often used in projects where comfort and aesthetics are important.

Ease of maintenance

Like most cellulosic fibres, lyocell is generally not very difficult to maintain. Lyocell yarns and knitted garments made from them are usually washed on a gentle cycle, to preserve their structure. It is also recommended to avoid very high temperatures. By following these simple rules, knitwear can remain beautiful for quite a long time.

Why is lozenge becoming more and more popular?

Needleworkers are increasingly looking for new materials that are easy to work with and give their knits an interesting character. Lyocell yarns are distinguished by their smoothness, lightness and modern look. These features make them an increasingly popular choice for a wide range of projects. Some knitters are discovering lyocell as an alternative to viscose or silk. Needlework allows you to try many different fibres. Each material gives the knitwear a different look and feel.

Lyocell thread is the modern choice, which combines natural fibres, softness and lightness. These qualities make lyocell ideal for lightweight garments, accessories or decorative projects. Sometimes it is these newer materials that allow you to discover a completely different feeling of needlework.
