Raffia yarn for bags, hats and summer accessories

Raffia yarn is chosen when a craft needs more structure, a defined texture and a light summer look. It is commonly crocheted into handbags, baskets, hats, placemats, boxes and interior details. The word raffia does not always mean the same material: yarn may be made from natural plant fibre, paper or cellulose-based viscose. How do types of raffia differ?

Natural raffia comes from the leaf fibre of raffia palms and usually has an irregular organic surface. Craft paper raffia is made from a paper-based material, while viscose raffia comes from regenerated cellulose. These types may differ in flexibility, sheen, resistance to bending or moisture, and the possibility of undoing and reworking the crochet. The name alone cannot reveal these properties, so follow the manufacturer label.

Siūlų Bangos currently offers five raffia options. Fibra Natura RAFFIA CHUNKY and Katia RAFFIA X-TREME each have approximately 120 m / 100 g, although their feel and construction may differ. Katia WOW RAFFIA has about 115 m / 50 g and is much lighter for a similar length. YarnArt PAPIRO TWISTED and PAPIRO TWISTED MELANGE are paper raffia yarns with approximately 170 m / 100 g; MELANGE adds a multicoloured effect.

How to choose raffia for a project

• For a handbag or basket structure, resistance to wear and construction matter. Consider whether the item needs a lining, base, handles or parts that help it keep its shape.
• For a hat you need a balance between structure and flexibility. Crochet that is too firm can be uncomfortable, while loose fabric may not hold the brim.
• For placemats and décor a clearly textured yarn can work well, but check the manufacturer care advice and the surface the item will touch.
• Multicoloured raffia often needs only a simple stitch because the colour effect already becomes the main feature.

Crochet hook size and gauge

The hook size on the label is a guide. The same yarn with a smaller hook can create a firmer, denser surface; a larger hook produces more flexibility. Make a swatch and check whether it holds its shape without becoming too stiff or tiring for your hands. Raffia adjusts to tension less readily than soft wool yarn, so regular breaks can help avoid unnecessary strain.

Calculate quantity by metres, not balls. It depends on item size, crochet gauge, stitch pattern, handle length and extra details. If the manufacturer supplies a pattern, use its figures and allow a little extra for a swatch and joins. Buy one dye lot for a single-colour project.

Raffia or crochet cord?

Raffia usually creates a lighter, flatter and more summery texture. Crochet cord Crochet cords are generally rounder and can suit sturdier bags or interior projects. For a more rustic plant texture, compare jute yarns, and for softer accessories, cotton yarns.

Colour, hardware and the finished look

Before buying, plan not only the yarn colour but also the hardware: fastening, handles, base and lining. Natural matte tones emphasise raffia texture, while bright or multicoloured shades can become the main accent. Assess colour in daylight because screen settings can change its appearance.

Care and storage

Do not wash every raffia item by one general rule: paper- and viscose-based materials can react differently to moisture. Follow the exact label, protect the item from distortion and store it without heavy compression.
