Washable wool and care labelling

Washable wool yarn is treated or constructed so that it is easier to care for than untreated wool. However, the words “washable wool” do not mean that every yarn can be handled in the same way. The permitted temperature, washing cycle, spin setting and drying method are always defined by the manufacturer of the specific yarn.

Is all washable wool machine washable?

No. Some yarn is labelled “superwash” and may be suitable for a wool cycle, while other yarn still requires gentle hand washing. When choosing, check not only the type of wool yarn but also the complete fibre content and all care symbols. If you are unsure, choose the gentler method and avoid sudden changes in water temperature.

Which projects is it useful for?

Easier-care wool is especially practical for everyday sweaters, hats, scarves, socks and items that are washed more often. Depending on the intended project, compare sock yarn and baby yarn, but make the final choice according to the fibre content, softness and care instructions of the particular product.

Before washing the finished item

Knit a swatch and wash it exactly as you plan to care for the finished item. This will show whether the gauge, dimensions, surface or drape changes. Keep the yarn label until the project is finished, because it provides the most reliable care guidance for that specific yarn.
