Alpaca yarn for warm and lightweight knitwear

Alpaca yarn is valued for warmth, soft drape and relatively low weight. Alpaca fibre is obtained by shearing alpacas, and its feel depends on fibre fineness, length, consistency, spinning and the final yarn construction. Two yarns with the same composition will not necessarily have the same loft, elasticity or suitability for one stitch pattern.

The category includes 100% alpaca yarn and blends with sheep or merino wool, silk, cotton, viscose and synthetic fibres. A blend is not an inferior choice: another fibre can add elasticity, strength or structure, or change the drape. Choose according to the project, not only the alpaca percentage on the label.

What does baby alpaca mean?

Baby alpaca usually describes a finer grade of alpaca fibre, not necessarily the age of the animal. Commercial grade boundaries can vary between countries and supply chains, so assess the composition and fibre description supplied by the exact manufacturer. For an item worn next to the skin, test the feel individually because no fibre name guarantees equal comfort for everyone.

Pure alpaca and alpaca blends

• 100% alpaca yarns, such as DROPS PUNA and Kremke BABY ALPACA LACE, can differ greatly in thickness. PUNA has approximately 110 m / 50 g, while BABY ALPACA LACE has about 400 m / 50 g, so they suit entirely different gauges.

Which projects suit alpaca yarn?

Alpaca suits sweaters, cardigans, shawls, scarves, hats and warm accessories. Pure alpaca is generally less elastic than sheep wool, so for fitted cuffs, ribbing or hats that must hold their shape, choose an appropriate blend and check gauge carefully. In a long, heavy garment, consider whether its own weight could stretch the fabric.

Colour and combining yarns

When holding alpaca together with another yarn, use a swatch to check gauge and the interaction of both colours and surfaces. A fluffy yarn can alter the shade of the base yarn and soften its texture. Assess colours in daylight.

Yarn length, swatch and care

Calculate quantity from the total length stated in the pattern, not ball weight. Allow extra for a swatch, longer sleeves or pattern changes and buy one dye lot. Wash the swatch before measuring because the drape and size of alpaca fabric can change after washing.
