DROPS yarn for knitting and crochet
DROPS Design is a Norwegian yarn and pattern brand with more than 40 years of design experience. Its extensive free pattern library is translated into 17 languages, so you can choose a project first and then select the yarn type, colour and quantity recommended for it.
The DROPS range includes merino and other wool yarns, alpaca, cotton, linen, viscose, silk, mohair and fibre blends. They differ in composition, thickness, loft, twist and length per ball, so equal ball weight does not make two yarns interchangeable.
Popular DROPS yarn ranges
For soft everyday garments, DROPS Merino Extra Fine is a popular choice. If you want the warmth of merino wool combined with the feel of cotton, consider DROPS Cotton Merino. DROPS Brushed Alpaca Silk and DROPS Kid-Silk create a light, fluffy surface and can be used alone or held together with another yarn. Warm garments can also be made with DROPS Lima, Flora, Melody, Puna and Nord.
For summer projects, explore yarns containing cotton or linen, such as DROPS Muskat and DROPS Bomull-Lin. Socks and items that need greater resistance to wear can benefit from wool and polyamide blends such as DROPS Fabel. For chunky knitting, choose a thicker collection, but check its length and recommended needle size.
How to choose yarn for your project
Start with the purpose of the finished item. A sweater needs suitable drape, softness and practical care; a hat or scarf should feel comfortable next to the skin; socks require durability; and a blanket should offer both warmth and manageable washing. For baby garments, check the exact fibre composition and care symbols and choose according to individual skin sensitivity.
Ball weight alone is not enough for an accurate comparison. Check the number of metres per ball, the gauge stated by the manufacturer and the recommended knitting needle or crochet hook size. Before a larger project, make and wash a swatch to see how the fabric changes and to calculate yarn more reliably.
Colour, quantity and dye lot
For a larger project, buy the full quantity at once. Balls of the same colour from different dye lots can vary slightly, so compare the lot number on the label. When substituting yarn, calculate by total length rather than the number of balls and allow a small reserve.
Free DROPS knitting and crochet patterns
Ideas and step-by-step instructions are available in the official DROPS knitting and crochet pattern library. Check the yarn group, gauge and quantity required for your size. If the suggested collection is unavailable or you want an alternative, look for yarn of a similar thickness and composition, but always confirm the result with a swatch.
Knitting or crochet?
Many DROPS yarns work for both knitting and crochet, although the same yarn produces a different fabric with each technique. Crochet is often firmer and may use more yarn. Follow the figures provided in your chosen pattern or test a small sample when designing your own project.
