Shiny yarn can add a subtle shimmer to your knitting or become its main decorative feature. What gives yarn its shine?

Use it alone or hold it with another yarn?

Very fine decorative thread is usually held together with wool, mohair, cotton or another main yarn. This lets you adjust the sparkle while retaining the feel of the main fibre. Thicker sparkly yarn, bouclé yarn or cord decorated with sequins can be used on its own. Before combining strands, check their total thickness, the recommended tools and whether the fine thread spreads evenly through the fabric. Which projects suit shiny yarn?

A subtly shimmering thread can be knitted into a sweater, vest, scarf, hat or socks. More noticeable yarns with glitter or sequins suit bags, decorative bands, edging, festive accessories and individual pattern details. Choosing the colour and intensity of the shimmer

Thickness, gauge and tools

A light ball does not necessarily contain only enough thread for a small detail: fine decorative thread may run to several hundred metres. Calculate the amount from the total yarn length required by the pattern and how you plan to use it. When holding a shiny thread with another yarn, calculate the required length of each strand separately. Sequins or an uneven surface can make intricate patterns harder to work, so simple stitches are often a good starting point. A decorative accent or a whole garment?

You do not need to use shiny yarn throughout the whole item. For a more economical, understated result, use it only on cuffs, collars, pockets, a band or a few rows of a pattern. For a whole garment, consider the surface feel, weight and contact between the decorative elements and the skin as well as appearance. A bag or home accessory may need firmness, while a scarf or top may benefit more from flexibility and drape. Plan the project around the properties of the specific yarn: shine describes an effect, not one particular yarn construction.

Care

Metallic thread, glitter and sequins may be more sensitive to friction, high temperatures and vigorous spinning.
