Rauma Røros Brodergarn - Tradition and Quality from Norway

Rauma Røros Brodergarn is one of the most appreciated yarns among textile craftsmen worldwide. Manufactured in the famous Rauma Garn factory in Norway, this yarn combines centuries-old tradition with modern quality.

Why choose Røros Brodergarn?

  • Unique raw material: the yarn is spun from Norwegian Spelsau sheep wool. This breed is characterised by its long, lustrous hair, which gives the yarn not only strength but also the natural shine of silk.
  • Versatility: although the name suggests embroidery (Brodergarn), this 2-strand yarn is very popular with weavers. They are ideal for tapestries, decorative fabrics and intricate twisted or scrolled bands.
  • Durability: thanks to the specific twist and the quality of the wool, this yarn is extremely durable, with low pilling and excellent shape retention.
  • Care: Gentle hand washing in cool water is recommended.

It is the ideal choice for reconstructive costumes, folk costumes and artistic textile projects where precision and authenticity are required.

Important to mention, Røros Brodergarn is not a classic knitting yarn (it is a harder, more heavily wound yarn). It will be stable, „dry“ and reminiscent of vintage, long-lasting wool products.

 Knitting with cords

As it is a fine (500 m/100 g) and strong yarn, knitting a single strand will give a light but strong result.

  • Recommended twine size: 2,0-3,0 mm (depending on the desired density).
  • Knitting features: the yarn has low elasticity, so it holds patterns well, especially traditional Norwegian (Jacquard) or textured patterns.
  • Suitable for: Thin, very warm and „real“ woollen gloves, socks (which will last a very long time), vests or even traditional sweaters if you want an authentic, slightly rough retro look.
  • Tip: If you want a looser knit, you can knit with two strands together (then use 3.5-4.5 mm cables).

 Crocheting with a codpiece

This yarn gives the perfect shape to garter stitch projects because it does not „fall off“.

  • Recommended size of the sleeve: 1,5 mm - 2,5 mm.
  • Crochet features: the strong winding prevents the yarn from slipping when crocheting, and the stitches look very clear and graphic.
  • Suitable for crocheted details, collars, baskets, decorative elements or even lace that needs the warmth and strength of wool.
  • Exclusive: Ideal for tunic crochet, as it creates a fabric-like surface.

Attention: Røros Brodergarn is a traditional, less processed wool, so people with sensitive skin may find it „biting“. However, after the first wash with a wool softener, the yarn softens a little and its durability is unsurpassed.
