Jute yarn: a strong plant fibre for décor and accessories
Jute yarn is made from fibres in the stems of the jute plant. It is generally firmer, drier and rougher than most garment yarn, so it is more often used for bags, baskets, rugs, plant-pot covers, gift packaging and other sturdy interior details. Natural variations in colour and thickness can be part of the fibre’s character.
How to choose jute yarn
Check yarn weight, twist, length and the manufacturer’s recommended hook or needle size. Denser crochet creates more structure, but very firm fibre may tire the hands, so test a small swatch before a larger project. If the item will touch the skin, assess the roughness first. For softer plant-fibre projects, compare linen yarn and cotton yarns.
Quantity and care
Calculate quantity from the project measurements, yarn length and your gauge swatch. Wet jute can change shape, soften or shrink, so dry the sample before final measurements. Follow the specific manufacturer’s washing and drying instructions; vigorous friction may alter the surface.
